Student Data Privacy

School District 15 takes the privacy of our students’ data seriously. It is our legal and ethical obligation to protect students and their data.

The D15 Technology Department supports the multiple system configurations and connections linking students, parents, teachers, and staff within its 20 schools, the Educational Service Center, and our service providers.

What is SOPPA?

Effective July 1, 2021, Illinois school districts are required by the Student Online Personal Protection Act, or SOPPA, to provide certain guarantees that student data is protected when collected by educational technology companies, and that data is used for beneficial purposes only (105 ILCS 85) as stated in the Act’s Legislative Intent. SOPPA regulates student data collection and use by schools, the Illinois State Board of Education, and third-party vendors.

In compliance with SOPPA, these vendors must enter into Data Privacy Agreements (DPA) with each district they work with. These agreements outline what data is stored, how it is protected, what the company can and cannot do with that data, and what they will do in the event of a data breach.

Data Privacy Laws

In accordance with state regulations, a school must provide a student’s parent/guardian a copy of the student’s covered information, including any covered information maintained by an operator or the Illinois State Board of Education, within 45 days of receiving a request. You are only allowed to review covered information for your student. A parent may make no more than two requests per student per trimester. To request a review of your child’s covered information, please submit a written request using the Consent for Release of Information form, and check the box Other and write “covered information/SOPPA”. Send this written request to recordsrequest@ccsd15.net or submit it to your School Principal.
