Social-Emotional Learning
The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment works with Educational Services to support the social, emotional, and behavioral well-being of students in District 15 through a multi-tiered system of support. Our mission is to help students and adults manage emotions, set goals, show empathy, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions for success in school and life.
Students in grades K-6 receive daily SEL instruction, which builds social-emotional skills and strengthens the school community. This helps students feel safe, supported, and ready to succeed academically. Teachers focus on key skills like self-awareness, emotional management, friendship, conflict resolution, and responsible decision-making. They also affirm students' home languages and cultures to create an inclusive environment.
The Second Step Elementary Classroom Kits is the primary tool used to structure SEL lessons focused on the Illinois Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Standards.
The SEL standards guide our approach to promoting healthy social and emotional development.
Self-Awareness and Self-Management: Manage emotions, recognize personal strengths, and achieve goals.
Relationship Skills and Social Awareness: Understand others' perspectives, build positive relationships, and resolve conflicts.
Responsible Decision-Making: Make ethical, safe, and responsible decisions. --- This version is more concise while maintaining the core information.
