It is with great pleasure that we recognize Emily Soenksen as an October 2024 Above and Beyond employee nominee. Emily has been honored by the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) for their Excellence in Middle School Mathematics Teaching Award. This prestigious award acknowledges her outstanding commitment to fostering a student-centered learning environment and her exceptional instructional leadership skills.

Ms. Soenksen, formerly a teacher at Carl Sandburg Junior High and now at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, according to colleagues and administrators that have worked with her have all shared that she has made a significant impact on the school community through her innovative teaching practices and connections with students. Furthermore, h\er dedication to prioritizing student thinking and engagement in mathematics has not only enhanced learning experiences, but has also inspired both her students and colleagues. Through her active involvement on various committees and teams, she has played a pivotal role in advancing our district’s educational initiatives surrounding our new math curriculum.

The ICTM award recognizes teachers who are highly motivated and effective in teaching mathematics to middle school students. It honors those who employ a variety of sound teaching strategies, participate in professional activities, and represent the profession with enthusiasm. Emily exemplifies these qualities and more, making her an invaluable asset to Thomas Jefferson Middle School and District 15 overall.
