District 15 offers a world language program in each of its four junior high schools. Each school has created its own unique and flexible program.
- French or Spanish I and II—French and Spanish classes are offered based upon sufficient minimum enrollment. Students will learn about the countries and people who speak these languages. Students will learn by listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities in the new language, and will learn to communicate in the target language by learning to count, greet people, and talk about daily activities. Students will discover cultural similarities and differences, and will realize how much the French and Spanish civilizations have contributed to life in the United States.
- Spanish for Native Speakers (SNS)—SNS is offered based upon sufficient enrollment. This class is for students with advanced oral proficiency in Spanish. Students will discuss literary works, current events, and acquire advanced literary skills.
Our program’s curriculum is based on the ACTFL standards, is aligned with the high school program, and uses a variety of relevant and engaging resources including the 2020 Wayside resource. The primary purpose of World Language instruction is to communicate, explore, and connect across cultures.
More than ever, we celebrate students’ interest in world languages, review content pacing and placement criteria, as well as discuss the future potential of the Seal of Biliteracy for our students.
