Eye Exam Help Available for District 15 Children
As of the 2008-09 school year, the Illinois State Board of Education mandates all kindergarteners, or students who are new to Illinois schools, have an eye exam. According to the ISBE Web site “the eye exam must be performed by a licensed optometrist or medical doctor who performs eye exams and is licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health.”
All vision screening must be completed prior to October 15.
Most area optometrists offer basic eye exams that fulfill the requirement. Costs can begin at $40 and go up, depending on the optometrist used.
The Palatine Lions Club Al Hoover Memorial PTA Health Fund is helping pupils in District 15 receive eye exams at a reduced fee. For more information on that program, or for assistance making an appointment, parents may call Elba Cortes at the School District 15 Educational Service Center at 847-963-3130 or see the brochure and download a coupon from the Palatine Lions Club at www.palatinelions.org.
