District 15 Offers Seniors Opportunities to Help in Schools

Community Consolidated School District 15 offers older residents of the district an opportunity to become personally involved in the district’s educational program through its unique Senior Exchange Program.

Open to district residents aged 55 and over, the Senior Exchange Program places participants in schools where they may work directly with students—one-on-one or in small groups to assist with reading, writing, or math—or be assigned to a computer lab, help out in the Learning Resource Center (library), or assist in the school office. Every effort is made to match the participant’s work preference with schools’ needs. Senior Exchangers also can specify the days and hours they are available to work.

Senior Exchange participants are paid the hourly minimum wage and may earn up to the amount of the District 15 portion of their property tax bills (an average is calculated for those who live in apartments or with family members). After earning the total allowable wages, many Senior Exchange members choose to continue as volunteers.

Senior Exchange participants report great personal satisfaction from the experience and from the knowledge of having helped individual students or a school. “If we can impart any of our experience to young people, it’s worth doing and tremendously rewarding to see the kids change,” one participant commented.

An employment verification form, a criminal background check, state and federal W-4 forms, a child abuse/neglect reporting form, and a negative TB test are required for participation in the program. For more information or to enroll in the Senior Exchange Program, contact Dorothy Roxworthy, Senior Exchange coordinator, at 847-963-3122.
