Special Education Parent Meeting Set for December 2

Special Education Parents Accessing Resources and Knowledge (SPARK) is a committee of the Northwest Suburban Council of PTA/PTSA which serves families of children with special needs in Community Consolidated School District 15.

Throughout the school year, SPARK offers monthly programs to provide families with relevant resource programs related to special education, opportunities to network, links to parents with outside sources, and publications and books on various special education topics.

Dr. Michael Frey of Comprehensive Psychological Services will speak on executive functioning from 7-8:30 p.m., Dec. 2, at Walter R. Sundling Junior High, 1100 N. Smith Street, Palatine.

Over the past several years, an intense focus in the psychological community has been on executive functioning and its critical role in the development and behavior of children. Frey, a child and adolescent neuropsychologist, specializes in various neurobehavioral disabilities, including ADHD, learning disabilities, autistic spectrum disorders, Tourette Syndrome, traumatic brain injuries, and oppositional defiant and bipolar disorders.

His presentation will help parents understand the child’s symptoms, become familiar with executive functioning, and learn how to select interventions to address limitations in various aspects of these conditions, including concerns for sustained attention, planning and organization, and social skills.

The next SPARK meeting is set for January 26, 2009, and will look at transitioning special needs students into high school.

For more information, contact SPARK Co-Chairs Lisa Traina, 847-358-7828, or
