November Volunteer of the Month: Tracy McMahon, secretary, Kimball Hill PTA

November 1, 2007

Tracy McMahonCheerfully confessing to being a “frustrated teacher,” Tracy McMahon delights in the time she spends at Kimball Hill School. “I never got around to becoming a teacher, so I’m glad the Kimball Hill staff and administration welcome and encourage parents and the PTA to be involved in the school and the classrooms.”

Tracy’s been a part of the Kimball Hill PTA for the past eight years. She’s currently in her second year of a two-year term as secretary and also doing a second stint in planning sixth-grade recognition. Her first PTA job was the hospitality committee, which she co-chaired with her sister, Jennifer Elkins (Volunteer of the Month in March 2004). Tracy is still involved with kindergym, and she’s served on the fun fair, teacher appreciation, and book fair committees, been a room representative, and helped with a copy service for teachers. She’s at the school Monday and Wednesday mornings—Monday to help in the classroom or with PTA projects, and Wednesday to do kindergym.

“Tracy has cheerfully devoted much time and effort,” said her nominator. “She is one of our parents who stands out due to her continued commitment to our children and our school. She understands the important part parents play along with the school staff to form a community. She is well respected by all, always willing to lend a hand, and truly a good ambassador for our PTA.”

A Rolling Meadows native, Tracy attended District 15 schools—the former Jonas Salk School and Carl Sandburg Junior High School. After graduation from Rolling Meadows High School, she went to work for an international freight company. She now works for another freight company as a licensed customs broker, handing documentation between importers and the government on shipments of various commodities. Although she and her husband Jack lived in Elk Grove Village for a time, they returned to Rolling Meadows nine years ago. Tracy and Jack are the parents of three: Daniel, a sophomore at Rolling Meadows High School; Timothy, a sixth grader at Kimball Hill; and Sarah, a fourth grader there. Tracy is involved with her children’s activities, including Daniel’s high school marching band, Timothy’s park district football league, and Sarah’s singing and dancing. She also enjoys spending time with her family, all of whom are still in Rolling Meadows. Her mother still lives in the house Tracy and her siblings grew up in, her sister lives two houses away from her, and their brother lives not far from Kimball Hill.

Tracy will be recognized at the November 14, 2007, Board of Education meeting, to be held at Walter R. Sundling Junior High School at 7 p.m.
