January Volunteer of the Month
Sue Judson, First Vice President, Walter R. Sundling PTA

January 1, 2008

Sue Judson“An advocate for students, the office staff, and the teachers.” That’s how her nominator describes Sue Judson, first vice president and past president of the Walter R. Sundling Junior High School PTA.

Sue and her husband Gary, a teacher and administrator at Prospect High School, are the parents of three daughters: Rachael, a former Sundling student who’s now a freshman at Palatine High School, and two Sundling seventh graders, twins Emily and Alissa. Sue has been involved with PTA since Rachael was in kindergarten, serving in many different capacities, including two years as president of the Jane Addams PTA and two years as president of the Sundling PTA. She’s also helped out in school classrooms, especially with reading, at Jane Addams and Virginia Lake.

“I love getting to know the staff, the teachers, and the other parents at my children’s schools,” Sue said. “It makes the schools seem like more of a community.” As president of the Sundling PTA, she particularly enjoyed the challenge of “fitting people into jobs they liked that would serve the kids.” Now as first vice president, Sue draws on her past experience to assist the current president when needed, and she’s presently working on implementing a new parent education program at Sundling.

“On countless occasions, Sue has initiated new ideas for helping teachers and students benefit from PTA involvement,” her nominator said. “She gives graciously of herself through book fair volunteer hours, parent orientation, open house, PTA meetings, and parent coffees. Most recently, she developed a wonderful idea for getting PTA volunteers more involved in the junior high by having them reorganize each classroom library by lexile score. She is a treasure!”

When she isn’t working on PTA and school projects, Sue enjoys taxiing her daughters to their various activities and going out with friends. She is active in her church and has tutored adults in English through a church program. She loves to travel, saying, “I’ll go anywhere, anytime, with anyone!” She also likes to read.

Sue will be recognized at the January 9, 2008, Board of Education meeting, to be held at Walter R. Sundling Junior High School at 7 p.m.
