District 15 Schools ‘Journey North’
Students in two District 15 junior high schools combined science lessons and gardening recently as part of a program called “Journey North.” Now they are eagerly awaiting the arrival of spring.
At Winston Campus Junior High School, students planted 1,000 Red Emperor tulip bulbs in the courtyard outside the school cafeteria and along the front parking lot. At Walter R. Sundling, the eighth-grade “Dream Team” planted 200 tulip bulbs along the Smith Street sidewalk, the second year these students have participated in the project. All Sundling students are getting an opportunity to plant a tulip, so a total of 1,000 bulbs are being planted on the school campus.
Each year, approximately 400 schools participate in “Journey North,” which uses tulip time to document the arrival of spring in North America. Schools register with a Journey North website and use the same kind of tulip bulbs and specific planting directions. When the flowers bloom, students track the progress of spring as it moves from south to north. Emergence time as well as bloom time is tracked.
Teachers coordinating the project are Cathy Berry and Praneeta Narechania at Winston Campus and Kevin Keehn at Sundling.
