April Volunteer of the Month: Lisa Leahy, Treasurer, Plum Grove Junior High PTSA

Lisa LeahyApril 1, 2007

Lisa Leahy is described by her nominator as “an extremely positive force” at Plum Grove Junior High School, where she serves as PTSA treasurer and volunteers in the Learning Resource Center.

“After agreeing to take on the treasurer’s job for 2006-07, she worked through the summer getting budgeting done and accounts set up so everything would be in readiness when school started,” her nominator said. “When the PTSA’s back-to-school picnic chair had to be out of town on the day of the picnic, Lisa stepped forward to coordinate the event—and coordinating games, food, and volunteers for more than 800 students is no small feat! When the membership chair needed help in printing out more than 1,000 PTA membership cards, Lisa stepped forward to help. She also provides trusted counsel to the PTSA president and other board members.”

Lisa has been involved in PTA and PTSA since her son Michael, now in eighth grade, was in kindergarten at Hunting Ridge. She’s continuing her volunteer work at Hunting Ridge through this year, when younger son Danny will complete sixth grade and move to Plum Grove. “I was assigned a PTSA job at Plum Grove before I even stepped in the door,” Lisa chuckles.

“What distinguishes Lisa is the manner in which she does her jobs,” said her nominator. “No job is too big … she is never too busy … she shares her knowledge freely … she shows respect and kindness to everyone she deals with … she is fair and level-headed. There is no question that she does all this not just for her children, but for all the students.”

Lisa grew up on the north side of Chicago, then her family moved to Park Ridge where she attended high school. She graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a degree in computer science and consumer affairs. An internship at Lutheran General Hospital led to a job as systems analyst there, a position she held until Michael was born. Lisa and husband Tim moved from Elk Grove Village to Palatine the week before Michael started kindergarten at Hunting Ridge. Lisa was a stay-at-home mom until last November, when she took a part-time job in the circulation department of Barrington Public Library. In her leisure time, Lisa enjoys reading, especially biography and historical fiction, and she participates in book clubs. She also works out regularly at the Buehler YMCA.

Lisa will be recognized at the April 11, 2007, Board of Education meeting, to be held at Walter R. Sundling Junior High School, at 7 p.m.
