District 15 Teachers Earn Certification From National Board For Professional Teaching Standards

Ten elementary and junior high school teachers from Community Consolidated School District 15 have earned national board certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) in 2005. The certification is considered the highest teaching credential available. The District 15 teachers were among 7,289 across the nation and just 315 in Illinois to earn certification this year.

“We congratulate these teachers for choosing to pursue the demanding certification process,” said Dr. Robert A. McKanna, superintendent. “Earning certification demonstrates a real commitment to teaching excellence and proves that they are among the most accomplished teachers in the nation.”

NBPTS certification is a voluntary, performance-based assessment. The process requires candidates to document their subject matter knowledge, provide evidence of effective teaching, and demonstrate their ability to manage and measure student learning. Throughout the school year, certification candidates assemble a portfolio that includes videotapes of classroom interactions, samples of student work, and reflective commentary on the evidence. Candidates also document education-related work outside the classroom. Trained NBPTS evaluators who teach in the same field as the candidates judge all components of the assessments.

The addition of these 10 teachers brings the number of board-certified teachers in District 15 to 82 currently on staff. In total, 94 District 15 teachers have earned certification, although some have retired or left the district.
