Plum Grove Student Places in National MATHCOUNTS Competition
Arjun Puranik, an eighth-grade student at Plum Grove Junior High School, placed twelfth in the MATHCOUNTS national competition May 12 in Arlington, Va. One of 228 students competing in the individual category, Arjun advanced to the intense, one-on-one oral countdown round which determines the national champion.
The Illinois team placed fifth in the team competition. The state teams were composed of the top four students from each state competition, which took place in March. Arjun was the highest scorer among Illinois team members.
MATHCOUNTS is a national math enrichment, coaching, and competition program open to all sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students. Local and state competitions are coordinated through the leadership of state and local chapters of the National Society of Professional Engineers, and sponsors include a number of top corporations in the nation. Lockheed Martin hosted the national competition.
Plum Grove’s MATHCOUNTS team was coached by teacher Nick Vassos and volunteer Krish Revuluri.
