May Employee of the Month: Kathy Weber
Secretary, Frank C. Whiteley School

Although Kathy has worked with District 15 for a number of years, most recently as a clerical assistant at Winston Campus, this is her first year as secretary at Frank C. Whiteley.

“Kathy is a positive, organized and helpful member of the Whiteley staff, highly professional while still creating a warm atmosphere” her nominators said. She is caring and patient and makes all who enter the office—parents and children—feel welcome and at home.”

Kathy says that the interaction she has with the school’s students is the best part of her job. “I love the kids’ silly little stories,” she chuckles. “It makes being here fun.” She also thinks the Whiteley parents are “wonderful.”

“She always makes time to answer questions or honor requests with a smile,” her nominators said of Kathy. “She meets the needs of a diversified student body and staff and is admired and respected by staff, parents, and students.”
Originally from the north side of Chicago, Kathy and her husband Denny lived in the city until their oldest child was ready for junior high school. “My sister-in-law was a teacher at Virginia Lake, and she raved about the schools in Palatine,” she said. So Kathy and Denny moved to Palatine, and their three children attended Winston Campus. She was very involved with the Winston Campus PTA, and one day former principal J.L. Myers said to her, “You’re here every day. Do you want a job?” Kathy applied and got the job!

Kathy and Denny are the parents of Kristy, now a third-grade teacher in Skokie; Maggie, who teaches Spanish at Maine West High School; and Kevin, a college student who doesn’t plan to become a teacher.

Kathy has taken a number of classes at Harper College to learn more about subjects that interest her. In her free time, she loves to read, especially best sellers, and enjoys gardening. She also enjoys crafts, including cross-stitching, sewing, and making wooden decorative items.

Kathy will be recognized at the May 10, 2006, Board of Education meeting, to be held at Walter R. Sundling Junior High School, at 7 p.m.
