Walter R. Sundling Walks for Charity

The second annual “When Pigs Fly” charity walk will be held beginning at 3 p.m. April 21 at Walter R. Sundling Junior High School, 1100 N. Smith St., Palatine. The event is in memory of the late Carolyn Baider, a special education teacher at the school.

Teams of students and teachers obtain donations and walk the Sundling track for two hours. All proceeds will be donated to the Make A Wish Foundation and the Sundling Kids in Need Fund. The first “When Pigs Fly” walk last year raised nearly $10,000. The money was donated to the Sundling Kids in Need Fund which provided holiday gifts to 12 families, including backpacks filled with school supplies, high school sweatshirts supplied by District 211, and gift certificates to local stores. In addition, a Sundling donation to Make A Wish sent a six-year-old leukemia patient and his family to Disney World.

Ms. Baider, who died in 2004, was a dedicated teacher who inspired her special education students to achieve their best. The only time teachers should ever give up on their students, she frequently said, was “when pigs fly”—a statement that inspired the name of the Sundling charity walk in her memory.
