April 2006 Volunteer of the Month:
Carla G., Vice President–Ways & Means,
Hunting Ridge School PTA
“How can I get involved in the PTA?” was one of Carla’s first questions when her daughter began kindergarten at Hunting Ridge six years ago. And get involved she did! Carla’s extensive PTA efforts have included putting out the student directory for two years, coordinating after-school specials for three years, handling membership for two years, and working on teacher appreciation and hospitality. Last spring, she was elected to the PTA executive committee as vice president of ways & means, organizing and coordinating two major fund raisers—a taffy apple sale and a giftwrap sale. “Because of her efforts and fund-raising success, we were able to raise enough funds to provide many quality programs and activities for our kids and their families,” her nominator said.
While the fund raisers were under way, Carla was also working on other PTA projects—coordinating school supply kits for delivery at the start of school, and organizing, staffing, and training PTA volunteers for a newly created print center at the school. The center supports teachers and program assistants by recruiting volunteers to do copying, laminating, and cutting so the staff has more time to spend in the classroom.
“Carla is extremely well organized and dedicated to her work with the PTA and the school,” her nominator said. “She has been flexible and is always willing to take that extra step to make sure that her committees operate smoothly and efficiently. She is willing to help out in whatever is needed for our school. We at Hunting Ridge are lucky to have such a caring, devoted parent.”
Carla was born in West Virginia, but her family moved to Chicago when she was young, and she was raised in Palatine. She attended Lake Louise and Virginia Lake Schools, junior high at Winston Park, and Palatine High School. She earned an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Harper College and studied criminal justice at Roosevelt University. She was a police/fire telecommunicator for the City of Rolling Meadows Police Department for 14 years. Carla and her husband Tony are the parents of Kendall, a fifth grader. Kendall dances at a championship level with the Trinity Academy of Irish Dance. Carla’s free time is spent taking Kendall to dance and doing volunteer work—including fund raising—for the academy. She also enjoys scrapbooking and crafts. Carla will be recognized at the May 10, 2006, Board of Education meeting, to be held at Walter R. Sundling Junior High School, at 7 p.m.
