Reading Is Topic for SPARK Meeting

“Reading 101: Assessments, Benchmarks, and Strategies” is the topic of the March meeting of SPARK, set for 7 p.m. March 7 in the Learning Resource Center at Plum Grove Junior High School, 2600 Plum Grove Rd., Rolling Meadows.

Kathy Volpe, a school reading specialist in District 201, will discuss the importance of phonemic awareness and fluency, key components for reading success. She will provide information on the types of activities that promote phonemic awareness and fluency and how to incorporate them into daily life. The majority of the presentation will focus on interactive games and strategies to help children at home.

SPARK, a Northwest Suburban Council of PTSA committee, serves families of children with special needs in District 15. The group’s purpose is to educate parents, provide resources, network and support for families of all children receiving special education services. The final meeting of the 2005-06 school year will be April 4 on the topic, “Surviving Parenthood in New and Challenging Times.”
