Learning Academy Students Plan Computer Recycling Event
Area residents wishing to dispose of computers and other used equipment will have an opportunity to donate them at the third annual computer recycling event planned by students at the John G. Conyers Learning Academy in Rolling Meadows. The one-day recycling project is set April 21 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Two previous drives by the Conyers Learning Academy yielded roughly 20 tons of computer-related equipment for recycling. The goal this year is to collect more than 8 tons of equipment and $1,000.
Assistive Technology Exchange Network (ATEN) of United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Chicago will collect the donated items. ATEN refurbishes unneeded computers and provides the newly refurbished equipment free to Illinois students with disabilities. The goal is to increase disabled students’ access to computers and assistive technology. The program not only benefits students who receive the systems, but also is environmentally beneficial because it reduces the amount of waste, including toxic elements, that might otherwise be deposited in landfills. This year ATEN is also collecting durable medical equipment to be recycled for the benefit of disabled children and adults.
