Conyers Learning Academy Conducts Book Drive For Mississippi School
Students, staff members, and families from the John G. Conyers Learning Academy are collecting books to help rebuild the school library at an elementary school devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The book drive is part of the Books from the Heart Adopt a School project. Conyers Learning Academy has set a goal of 500 books to be donated to Central Beach Elementary School in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
Community members are invited to participate in the book drive by contributing new and like-new books appropriate for students in kindergarten through fifth grades. The drive will run through March 13.
Books—either fiction or non-fiction—can be dropped off in the main entrance of the building (inside the double doors), 2800 Central Rd., Rolling Meadows. The Conyers Learning Academy PTA has offered to pay shipping costs for sending the books to Central Beach School.
In conjunction with the book drive and the National Education Association’s “Read Across America” program, Conyers Learning Academy has scheduled a special reading event March 2 at the school. Guest readers include students from Rolling Meadows High School, Rolling Meadows Mayor Ken Nelson, District 15 superintendent Dr. Robert A. McKanna, other district administrators, and a representative from the Rolling Meadows Fire Department. Guest readers will be on hand between 9 and 10:45 a.m. and from noon to 2 p.m. The event will also include an appearance by “Cat in the Hat” in celebration of the birthday of the author of the noted children’s book by that name, Dr. Seuss, along with a birthday cake.
For additional information about the book drive or the reading event, call teacher Tracey Wrobel at 847-963-3400.
