District 15 Seeks Parent Input on New Math Textbooks
Parents of District 15 students in grades three through six are encouraged to visit any of the district’s elementary schools or the Joseph M. Kiszka Educational Service Center, 580 N. First Bank Dr., Palatine, to preview proposed new math textbooks. If adopted, these two textbook series will be used in all district schools to provide consistency in the math curriculum across the district.
The District 15 math committee has recommended the following textbooks:
Grades three, four and five—Houghton Mifflin Math This series provides a comprehensive, fully integrated mathematics curriculum. Instruction emphasizes manipulatives, models, language and symbols to build a solid math foundation for students. “Math Tracks,” an audio tutor on CD-ROM, is available to assist students, and a website offers practice drills, test strategies and more for students and parents. Teachers have access to a wide array of supplemental resources. Sixth grade—McDougal Littell Middle School Course 1 Math This text focuses on key math concepts, providing clear, concise instruction combined with rigorous practice. It helps develop active learners by including fully integrated notetaking and study strategies, as well as stepped-out examples and problem-solving plans. A variety of classroom management and presentation tools help teachers address the diverse student needs. This text is aligned with the seventh- and eighth-grade textbooks used in the district’s junior high schools, also published by McDougal Littell. The textbook is supplemented by on-line resources for both students and parents.
The cost of these new textbooks would be partially covered through the Illinois Textbook Loan Program, administered by the Illinois State Board of Education. This program, authorized by the Illinois Legislature in 1975, provides for the state to purchase curriculum materials and then loan them to pupils.
Review copies are now available, and parent feedback will be accepted through March 2.
