February Volunteer of the Month:
Mary Bauer, Membership Chair, Virginia Lake PTA
After two years as treasurer of the Virginia Lake PTA, Mary Bauer planned to take a less time-consuming role in the organization this year. “I’ll do school pictures—that’s all,” she told herself. But when there was surprise last-minute opening in the membership chair position, her plans changed. “Mary graciously agreed to take on this demanding position (in addition to school pictures) and is doing a terrific job,” her nominator said. Mary has been actively involved with the Virginia Lake PTA for six years. She’s not only been treasurer and a member of the board, but she’s also worked on Reflections, the book fair, and the fun fair. In addition, she’s been a room mom many times, helped with kindergym, read with students in classrooms, and “lots of other stuff.” She enjoys volunteering with the PTA and the school because “this is such a great group of people,” she says. “When I was sick with a 103-degree fever on the day our membership drive was to wrap up with a roller skating party, they all stepped up and made it happen.” She grew up in Arlington Heights and attended Rolling Meadows High School. She earned a B.S. in business from Northern Illinois University. She worked in banking as a new accounts supervisor and handling IRAs for many years, then turned her talents to sales. For the past ten years, she’s been a full-time mom, which she regards as a privilege that makes it incumbent on her to share her time and talents as a volunteer. Mary and her husband Bill are the parents of Alexis, a seventh grader at Walter R. Sundling, and Bradley, a fourth-grader at Virginia Lake. Both children are involved in travel soccer and travel basketball, so Mary says most of her spare time is occupied with driving them to athletic events and activities and volunteering in support of their teams. Bradley has also been in a production company, Schaumburg on Stage, for three years, and this year Mary is heading up the ticket committee for an upcoming production of “Grease.” “Mary demonstrates a consistent dedication, generosity and general good nature under extreme circumstances,” her nominator said.
Mary will be recognized at the February 8, 2006, Board of Education meeting, to be held at Walter R. Sundling Junior High School, at 7 p.m.
