Jane Addams Second Grader Wins PTA ‘Reflections’ Contest
A photograph of volunteers at an area food pantry, taken by Jaxon Stout, a second-grade student at Jane Addams School, Palatine, was a national winner of the 2004-05 PTA “Reflections” contest. Jaxon’s photo was taken to illustrate this year’s Reflections theme, “A Different Kind of Hero.”
Entered in the primary age group, Jaxon’s photo won at the local level before advancing to district, state, and national levels. National winners were selected by judges who are professionals in the four “Reflections” categories: photography, visual arts, musical composition, and literature.
Jaxon’s achievement was recognized at the Illinois PTA District 37 “Reflections” ceremony and again at a ceremony at the Illinois PTA convention held in early May. He received an award of $200 and a silver-plated medallion. His photo will be posted on the National PTA website for one year, and the original will be part of the Illinois PTA year-long traveling “Reflections” exhibit on display at various locations across the state.
Jaxon took his photograph in the fall of 2004. His grandmother, Barbara Stout, and other volunteers at the Proviso Food Pantry have been distributing food to 120 needy families each week for more than 15 years. In the past, Jaxon has helped gather food at collection sites to support the pantry.
