Lake Louise School Receives General Mills Award

Lake Louise School in Palatine has been named one of ten recipients of a Parental Involvement in Education (PIE) grant from General Mills’ Box Tops for Education program. Lake Louise and the other 2005 winners were selected from among nearly 800 school applications from across the United States.

The school will receive a $2,000 grant to implement a parent involvement program called Parents Partner to Unify Lake Louise (PULL). PULL seeks to encourage families of all nationalities to become more involved in the school. With a high proportion of second language learners and a high mobility rate of students moving in and out of the school, Lake Louise developed the plan to match parents new to the school with long-time parents to engage them and teach them about the school community. Parents of similar backgrounds will be paired to overcome language barriers and facilitate communications.

All parents involved in PULL will be invited to regular social gatherings, parent education sessions, and family outings. By increasing parent involvement in the school, the program aims to reduce absenteeism, tardiness and homework difficulties and enhance parent participation in school functions and PTA activities. PULL will be kicked off by am all-school multicultural event to welcome all families into the school community.

The PIE grant program is a component of General Mills’ Box Tops for Education program, which has provided more than $100 million in cash to U.S. schools since 1996.
