Bus Drivers to Hone Skills at District 15 “Roadeo”
All District 15 school bus drivers will have an opportunity to demonstrate their driving skills and hone their expertise at the district’s fifth annual School Bus Roadeo May 5-6. The event will take place in the Harper College parking lot. On May 5, the roadeo will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. On May 6, hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Barrels, cones and even human figurines are use to create a challenging course that requires drivers to respond safely and appropriately. The roadeo will also include a written test, and each driver will “pre-trip” a bus, checking it over to be sure it’s safe and ready to drive—an activity that all drivers routinely conduct each day with the buses they drive. One segment of the course features a fake $20 bill taped to the pavement. Drivers who can stop their buses with one wheel directly positioned atop the bill will win a real $20 bill.
The top two or three scorers in the district roadeo will be given the opportunity to compete in the state roadeo, sponsored by the Illinois Association for Pupil Transportation June 24-25 in Tinley Park.
