NEA President to Visit Community Consolidated School District 15

Reg Weaver, president of the National Education Association, based in Washington, D.C., will visit District 15 on February 16 as a guest of the Classroom Teachers Council (CTC) and the Educational Support Personnel Association (ESPA).

Weaver is scheduled to observe students and classes at Willow Bend School from 1:15 to 3 p.m. He will be interviewed by students in the school’s media production center, hear students explain the use of data collection folders and get an overview of the district’s reading intervention programs. Later, he will be guest of honor at a reception hosted by the CTC and ESPA at Walter R. Sundling Junior High School beginning at 3:30 p.m., and he will be the featured speaker at a teacher rally beginning at 4:30 p.m., also at Sundling.

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to visit a school district that has earned a national reputation for quality and performance excellence,” Weaver said. “I was so pleased last year when District 15 was named as a winner of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and I know that seven of the district’s schools have been recognized with the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon awards. I’m eager to see first-hand what this district is doing to achieve the kind of excellence most school districts only aspire to.”

Weaver was elected president of the 2.7 million-member NEA, the nation’s largest professional employee organization, in 2002. He is one of the country’s foremost African American labor leaders. As NEA president, Weaver travels across the country speaking on behalf of education reform and innovation in the nation’s schools.

Having begun his career as a middle school science teacher, Weaver is a 30-year classroom veteran. He rose through the NEA ranks, first serving as a local association president and then as president of the Illinois Education Association from 1981 to 1987. During that time, he served on many Illinois-based educational commissions, councils, and task forces. He was a member of the NEA executive committee from 1989 to 1995, and for six years he served as NEA vice president.

He currently serves on the executive board of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and on the board of governors of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. He is also a member of the board of directors of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. He is listed in Who’s Who, as well as in Who’s Who in Black America.
