Two District 15 Teachers Named Golden Apple Finalists
Two teachers from District 15 schools have been selected as finalists for Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching, which annually honors 10 outstanding teachers from public and non-public schools in Cook, Lake, and DuPage Counties.
Kathleen Cochrane, third/fourth gifted teacher from Stuart R. Paddock, and Mimi Conrad, fourth-grade teacher at Kimball Hill, are among 32 Golden Apple finalists. Selection of the 10 winners will be made by the Golden Apple Awards Selection Committee, a volunteer group that includes former Golden Apple winners, principals, administrators, and other educators. The finalists will be observed in their classrooms before the 10 winners are chosen.
Teachers are nominated for the award by fellow educators, past and present students, parents, and the general public. The Golden Apple Foundation receives about 1,100 nominations every year. The awards program rotates in a three-year cycle by grade level. This year, fourth- through eighth-grade teachers will be honored; next year, high school teachers; and in 2006, pre-kindergarten through third-grade teachers.
The Golden Apple awards ceremony is televised on WTTW, Channel 11. Winners receive a tuition-free fall sabbatical of courses at Northwestern University, a $2,500 cash award, a personal computer, and induction into the Golden Apple Academy, comprising past Golden Apple Award winners and serving as a resource providing programs and ideas to improve education for all students.
Finalists and their principals will be recognized at a “Celebration of Teaching Excellence” in Chicago on February 12.
