Teams from Six District 15 Schools Qualify for FIRST LEGO League State Tournament

Teams of students from four elementary schools and two junior high schools, competing in District 15’s FIRST LEGO League tournament held January 15 at Stuart R. Paddock School, qualified to move on to the state competition.

Teams from Stuart R. Paddock, Lincoln, Hunting Ridge, and Gray M. Sanborn elementary schools and Plum Grove and Winston Campus junior highs, will compete in the Illinois FIRST LEGO League Tournament, scheduled for January 21-22, at Forest View in Arlington Heights.

The theme of this year’s FIRST LEGO League mission is “No Limits,” which involves the creation of robotic technology solutions to help individuals who face physical challenges. Students built and programmed robots to perform everyday tasks such as opening a gate, climbing stairs, serving dinner, feeding pets, and more.

Although not qualifying for the state tournament, a team from Pleasant Hill found another path to success. The team, “The Highly Educated Lego Builders,” targeted local grocery stores where people in wheelchairs, with arthritis, or other disabilities might have difficult reaching items on higher shelves. They made a presentation to two local grocery stores recommending the use of a product called “The Claw,” also known as an EZ reacher. One grocery store manager was so impressed that he ordered one from the team and plans to secure it to one of the store’s mobile shopping carts.
