Three Students from Plum Grove Win Recognition for Haikus
Three students from Plum Grove Junior High School were recognized June 7 by representatives of Japan Airlines International for their entries in the 8th World Children’s Haiku Contest sponsored by the airline.
Erin Daigle, Ashley Schwall and Jeff Pascus were among 51 semifinalists from the U.S. whose entries will be forwarded to Tokyo to be considered for the “Haiku by Children” anthology to be published later this year. The contest received 760 entries from across the U.S., including 35 from Plum Grove Junior High students.
The World Children’s Haiku program aims to promote the inclusion of this unique Japanese poetry into the curricula of elementary and junior high schools around the globe, explained Yoshihiro Ozawa, vice president and regional manager, Central & southern Region for JAL. The purpose is to spread the enjoyment of creating haiku and encourage a more comprehensive understanding of both the Japanese culture from which it came and present-day Japan.
