Carl Sandburg Teacher to Visit Japan

Kristin Kutzner Huzar, a teacher at Carl Sandburg Junior High School in Rolling Meadows, will visit Japan for three weeks in June as a guest of the Japanese government.

She was selected by a panel of educators from a national pool of more than 2,000 applicants to participate in the Fulbright Memorial Fund teacher program. She will be part of a group of 200 primary and secondary teachers visiting Japan as a part of a program created to promote greater intercultural understanding between the two nations.

Sponsored by the government of Japan, the program was launched in 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the U.S. government’s Fulbright Program, which has enabled more than 6,000 Japanese citizens to study in the U.S. on Fulbright fellowships for graduate education and research. More than 4,000 U.S. teachers have visited Japan through the program. Upon their return, they share what they have learned about Japan with their students and communities.
