Signatures of Paddock Students to Fly on Space Shuttle

Stuart R. Paddock School is one of just 500 schools around the world chosen to participate in Student Signatures in Space, a NASA program that provides the opportunity for students’ names and signatures to fly on a space shuttle flight.

All 740 Paddock students signed a giant poster provided by NASA. The poster was sent to Lockheed Martin Corporation where the signatures will be digitally captured and forwarded to NASA for inclusion in the manifest of a U.S. space shuttle mission. After the mission, the poster will be returned to Paddock for display, along with an official NASA certification verifying that the signatures flew in space and a photo of the shuttle crew which flew the mission.

The space shuttle mission selected for Student Signatures in Space will be one scheduled for launch in the fall, when most schools are in session so that students can follow the progress of “their” mission. Shortly after the next school year begins, participating schools will receive ongoing e-mails of space-related lesson plans, mission status reports, and teaching information.

At Paddock, signing the poster was part of the school’s Space Day celebration earlier in May. Students also wrote essays saying why they would like to go into space, watched a video about space, and received bookmarks from Lockheed Martin. Now they are eagerly awaiting the arrival of lunar samples on loan from NASA.
