April Volunteer of the Month: Lizzie Falkenberg
PTA President, Virginia Lake School

“Lizzie brings a breath of fresh air to Virginia Lake with her positive attitude, outgoing personality, and boundless energy,” said the person who nominated Lizzie Falkenberg as Volunteer of the Month. Although this is Lizzie’s first year as PTA president, she’s been an active member of the Virginia Lake PTA for the past seven years.

“I started as Fun Fair chairperson,” Lizzie recalls. “I thought I was just volunteering to serve on the committee!” She chaired that committee for two years and it remains one of her favorite activities at the school. However, she’s taken on many other responsibilities, including kindergym, serving as a room representative, chairing the room rep committee, chairing the cultural arts committee, and chairing the yearbook committee. She also twice served as PTA vice president. Recently, she’s been deeply involved in organizing an informational meeting and follow-up workshop for families of Virginia Lake students who wish to pursue U.S. citizenship.

“Lizzie is a perfectionist who completes each task enthusiastically and makes it look effortless,” said her nominator. “She reaches out to staff, students, and parents and has an incredibly sunny disposition. The teachers and staff love having Lizzie involved with the students because she is so full of energy, offering to help whenever something comes up.”

Originally from the Glenview area, Lizzie attended Glenbrook South High School and Indiana University in Bloomington where she majored in business. She worked in retail management and buying, first in St. Louis, and then for Carson Pirie Scott in the Chicago area. She is currently a District 15 substitute teacher and has subbed in nearly all of the district’s schools in a variety of classroom settings. She enjoys it so much she is considering going back to school to earn her certification in elementary education. Lizzie and her husband, Charlie, are the parents of four children, all at Virginia Lake: Brian, sixth grade; Meghan, fifth grade; Will, second grade; and Shannon, kindergarten. Charlie also attended Virginia Lake. Lizzie enjoys long daily walks with the family’s golden lab, Annie.

Lizzie will be recognized at the April 14, 2004, Board of Education meeting, to be held at Walter R. Sundling Junior High School, at 7 p.m.
