Virginia Lake PTA Sponsors Citizenship Workshop

Some 40 people interested in becoming American citizens attended the first of two citizenship workshops sponsored by the PTA of Virginia Lake School on March 11. A second workshop, which will help interested individuals actually begin the citizenship process, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 3, at the school, 925 N. Glenn Dr., Palatine.

Jesus Rodriguez, immigration coordinator for the Erie House in Chicago, was speaker for the March 11 session and will return on April 3 with ten volunteers to provide guidance and assistance. The services provided by the Erie House are free; the organization asks only a $10 fee to cover photo expenses. The cost of the citizenship application is $310. Rodriguez has agreed to follow individuals who start the application process during the workshop through the entire process.

“We feel that there are a lot of individuals who are scared or intimidated by this process,” said PTA president Lizzie Falkenberg. “We just want them to be aware that there are ways to gain citizenship, and that we are there to help.”
