District 15 Representatives go to Washington to Accept Baldrige National Quality Award

A group of 50 representatives of Community Consolidated School District 15 will travel to Washington, D.C., for a presentation ceremony honoring the district and six other winners of the 2003 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award on Tuesday, March 9.

Commerce Secretary Donald Evans and other federal officials will be on hand for the presentation, scheduled for 9:00 a.m. (CST) at the Crystal Gateway Marriott Hotel in Arlington, Va. Louis A. Sands, president of the District 15 Board of Education, and Dr. Robert A. McKanna, superintendent, will officially accept the award.

Among those in the audience will be the District 15 contingent, which includes members of the Board of Education, principals, teachers, staff members, representatives of the communities served by District 15, and one student from each of the district’s four junior high schools. Funding for the trip came from a grant from the Malcolm Baldrige organization.

The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award is the nation’s highest honor for quality and performance excellence. The seven 2003 winners were selected from among 68 applicants. All seven were evaluated rigorously by an independent board of examiners in seven areas: leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, information and analysis, human resources focus, process management and results. The evaluation process included about 1,000 hours of review and a site visit by teams of examiners to clarify questions and verify information in the applications.

District 15 is only the third public school district ever to win the Baldrige Award. In addition to District 15, the other 2003 winners and the categories in which they won are: Medrad, Inc., Indianola, Pa. (manufacturing); Boeing Aerospace Support, St. Louis, Mo., (service); Caterpillar Financial Services Corporation U.S., Nashville, Tenn. (service); Stoner, Inc., Quarryville, Pa. (small business); Baptist Hospital Inc., Pensacola, Fla. (health care); and Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, Kansas City, Mo. (health care).
