Winston Campus Student Receives Technology Award

Michael Nowicki, 15, an honor roll student at Winston Campus, has been selected as a winner of the 2004 Outstanding Student Technology Award presented by Infinitec North, a division of United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Chicago. Michael will receive his award at a ceremony April 22.

Michael was nominated for the award by Linda Stanish, District 15 teacher of the visually impaired, for his use of the assistive technology, Braille Lite 40. Michael uses his Braille Lite 40 in the same way sighted students use pencils and notebooks. He has been using the device for the past three years and has been able to be independent in completion of daily assignments, homework, and long-term projects. Michael has done so well with it, according to Ms. Stanish, that he has been asked by The Research Institute to field test the Nemeth Code tutorial, a new software program to teach the Braille math code.

Blind since birth, Michael was born in Poland. His family has lived in Rolling Meadows since October 1996 when he started first grade at Winston Campus. In nominating him, Ms. Stanish said: “Michael is totally blind. He is in accelerated classes, is an outstanding citizen, and is well liked by his peers. He has a good attitude about his disability and appreciates the technology that allows him to function independently.”
