Thomas Jefferson School Plans Family Reading Night

A Family Reading Night celebrating the 100th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’ birthday is set for March 4 at Thomas Jefferson School, 3805 Winston Dr., Hoffman Estates. The event is sponsored by the school’s teacher literacy committee and the PTA.

Kindergarten through second-grade students will listen to Dr. Seuss’ popular story, Bartholomew and the Oobleck, read aloud, then they will rotate through four different stations: making and exploring of oobleck, rhyming games with Dr. Seuss stories, Dr. Seuss poetry, and The Cat in the Hat ball toss game.

Third through sixth graders will participate in “Dr. Seuss Survivor,” a reality TV-type challenge with the students working in tribes. They will create a tribal name, a tribal bandana to wear, and take a reading oath. Working as a tribe, they will have 10 minutes to complete five tasks: a Dr. Seuss trivial challenge, writing a poem, assembling character puzzles and matching the character to its book, a “Fear Factor” eating challenge, and unscrambling the animals in the Foot Book challenge.

Afterward, all participants will sing “Happy Birthday” to Dr. Seuss and enjoy cake and juice. They can also participate in the teacher baby photo contest, trying to match teachers’ childhood pictures to their favorite Dr. Seuss books. Winners will be announced at the school on March 5.
