Hunting Ridge Students Celebrate Valentine’s Day with ‘Heart’
Cards and candy for Valentine’s Day are nice, but doing something that makes a difference in the community has a more lasting impact. That was the reasoning of five sixth-grade girls who envisioned a new type of Valentine’s celebration at Hunting Ridge School this year.
The girls—Margo Banakis, Abigail Danekas, Lena Brottman, Taylor Glassman, and Allison Drost—approached the school’s student council, suggesting that money traditionally spent on cards and candy for classmates be donated instead to one of six charitable organizations. The student council embraced the idea, and the Hunting Ridge Heart-to-Heart project was begun. Students could choose to participate or not, or even do both.
More than $2,200 was raised. Students voted from a list of charities
and the Make A Wish Foundation was selected to receive the donation.
