District 15 Superintendent Appointed to Governor’s Department of Education Task Force

Dr. Robert A. McKanna, superintendent of Community Consolidated School District 15, has been appointed by Governor Rod Blagojevich as a member of a task force formed to study the creation and structuring of a new state Department of Education, as proposed by the governor in his state of the state address in January.

Dr. McKanna was one of 38 school administrators named to the Education Accountability Task Force. The group will be chaired by Michael J. Bakalis, former state superintendent of schools and currently a member of the faculty of Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

The task force will work with the governor’s office throughout the coming year to develop specific proposals for helping Illinois improve its ratio of total education funds spent on instruction and assist in designing a new Department of Education that would respond to the needs of local school districts. The group will be charged with developing new ideas to accomplish three primary objectives:

1. Help reduce non-instruction related costs and focus more resources directly to education;

2. Improve communication and responsiveness between a Department of Education and local school districts; and

3. Reduce existing mandates, bureaucracy and rules that tie the hands of school districts.

“The input of this distinguished panel of experienced school managers will be critical in helping us address the real problems and obstacles that are hampering education in Illinois,” Blagojevich said.
