January Volunteer of the Month: John Tomassone, Volunteer, Walter R. Sundling Band Program

A trumpet teacher he had in eighth grade inspired John Tomassone’s lifelong love of music and performing—and his enthusiasm for sharing his talents. “He loved music so much it was infectious,” John remembers. “Now I’m trying to bring that to the kids I work with.”

John is currently in his third year as a parent volunteer for the Sundling band program. His involvement began when his daughter Lauren entered the program—and although Lauren has moved on to Palatine High School, he continues to volunteer his time and talent. He attends jazz band rehearsals twice a week, is frequently on hand for after-school rehearsals, and supports the students’ efforts in concerts and music contests. He’s also made his home available to work with students after school.

“As an accomplished trumpet player, John has a great love for music and the arts,” said his nominator. “Whether rehearsing small group sectionals, providing assistance to band members, or helping band members on an individual basis, John is a tremendous asset to our program.”

A native of Park Ridge, John attended North Texas State in Denton, TX. He now lives in Palatine with wife Karen; daughter Lauren, 15, who plays flute and piano, and son John, 11, a sixth-grader at Lincoln School and a trumpet and piano player. John has a custom fence and deck company, but in his spare time, he plays trumpet in what he calls the “B circuit” of big bands. In addition to his work at Sundling, he’s also deeply involved with the music program at the College of Lake County.

“The best lessons I learned were from playing with very good players,” he says. “Now I’m trying to bring my real music experience to others. The kids deserve these opportunities.”
