District 15 Schools to Observe Veterans’ Day
Students and schools across District 15 will honor and remember the nation’s veterans on Veterans’ Day, November 11, with a variety of activities, including these:
• Walter R. Sundling Junior High School will hold its annual Veterans’ Day breakfast on November 11. Breakfast will be prepared by Sundling staff for students and family members who are veterans. State Representative Suzie Bassi and John Conyers, superintendent of schools, will speak; other invited guests include State Senator Wendell Jones and Palatine mayor Rita Mullins. Following breakfast, veterans will be videotaped sharing memories of their time in service; the video will be shown later that day to all Sundling students. The Sundling band and chorus will also be playing as part of the morning activities.
• Frank C. Whiteley School will be holding two 30-minute assemblies hosted by veterans who will reflect on what it was like to be a soldier. The veterans will also discuss the types of training and activities they participated in and they will discuss the significance of the day. Following their presentation, various classrooms discussions will take place.
• Pleasant Hill School will have approximately five veterans
on hand throughout the day talking with students reflecting on the
significance of Veterans’ Day. Additionally, the veterans will participate
in an all-school flag ceremony depicting the original Armistice
Day. The hallways of Pleasant Hill will be lined with girl and boys
scouts in uniform while four students play “Taps” during the flag
ceremony.
• Thomas Jefferson School will salute veterans with their third annual third-grade music program. In addition, members of the local VFW post will meet and talk with students in the afternoon on November 12.
• Gray M. Sanborn School’s third-grade classes will perform
“Sing for the Red, White and Blue” for the rest of the student body
during an all-school assembly. The program will feature patriotic
music as well as an art show, as the third graders have created
a tribute to the great American artists of our time. The artwork
will be on display throughout the day. The performance will be repeated
for parents and families later that same evening.
• Hunting Ridge School will host an all-school assembly featuring
the American Legion from Mount Prospect. They will present the colors,
explain the meaning and significance of Veterans’ Day, discuss American
flag etiquette, and listen to Hunting Ridge students who will be
performing a number of patriotic songs.
• Kimball Hill School will conduct two morning assemblies.
Student government, chorus, and band will be part of the special
program. The first assembly for kindergarten and Grades 1, 2 and
3 will begin 9:30 a.m. The second assembly for Grades 4, 5, and
6 will begin at 10:15 a.m. All parents and community members are
invited to attend. During the week of November 4, the Kimball
Hill morning announcements will include taped interviews with local
veterans. They will be answering selected questions submitted by
the students of Kimball Hill.
