District 15 Board of Education Presents 'Champions for Children' Award to Dr. John Conyers

Retiring District 15 superintendent Dr. John G. Conyers was honored as one of the district's 'Champions for Children' at the Board of Education June 11 meeting. He joins only five other individuals who have been honored with this special award.

"The children of District 15, now and for the last 18 years, have had no stronger champion than Dr. Conyers," said Lou Sands, president of the board. "Thousands of children, parents, and members of the community have benefitted from his vision and leadership. His efforts and dedication have ensured that our students have had access to a world-class education. District 15 and our fine schools would not be as excellent as they are today had it not been for Dr. Conyers."

Sands presented a plaque to Dr. Conyers, who is retiring after 18 years of service to District 15 as superintendent. Dr. Conyers was also honored last month when the Board of Education voted unanimously to rename the district's special services school as the John G. Conyers Learning Academy.

Previous Champions for Children have included Robert J. Coles, vice president, Northrop Grumman, in 1998; Rudy Nelson, former director of the Rolling Meadows Park District, in 2002, and Fred Hall, former executive director of the Palatine Park District, also in 2002; and Joseph Kiszka, former district administrator, and Ralph Schultz, a long-time volunteer, who were awarded the 'champions' designation at the May 28 Board of Education meeting.
