Community Consolidated School District 15 Board of Education Names School Facility in Honor of Retiring Superintendent
Dr. John G. Conyers, retiring superintendent, was honored by the Community Consolidated School District 15 Board of Education May 28 when board members voted unanimously to name the district's newly renovated special programs school the "John G. Conyers Learning Academy."
Dr. Conyers was presented with a replica of the plaque featuring the new name that will be placed on the building. A formal dedication ceremony will be held in the fall.
"This is a lasting way to recognize and commemorate Dr. Conyers' sincere dedication and his many valuable contributions to District 15," noted Lou Sands, Board of Education President. "It's particularly appropriate because Dr. Conyers was instrumental in the board's decision in 1995 to bring special education services back into the district. Before that, the District's special needs students were served through a consortium. Dr. Conyers led the effort to improve the quality of the services for special needs students and their families by providing those services in-district. One of the key outcomes of that decision was the creation of The Learning Academy as an alternative school to meet those needs."
The Learning Academy, 2800 W. Central Rd., Rolling Meadows, houses early intervention/early childhood programs, a behavior disorder program for students with severe emotional and behavioral difficulties, programs for students with multiple needs and alternative classes for students who exhibit serious disciplinary problems. It opened at the beginning of the 1995-96 school year in preparation to accommodate the district's special needs students beginning with the 1996-97 school year. The facility will reopen at the beginning of the 2003-04 school year after a year of extensive renovation.
Dr. Conyers is retiring June 30 after 18 years of service as superintendent of District 15.
