District 15 Chamber Strings Wins First Place at Gateway Music Festival

A 35-piece chamber orchestra, the District 15 Chamber Strings, earned a first place rating and trophy at the Gateway Music Festival on May 3 at National-Louis University.

The Chamber Strings, directed by Jon Preddice, orchestra teacher at Walter R. Sundling Junior High, comprises student musicians from all four junior high schools in District 15, along with three sixth graders from district elementary schools. Each student is also a member of the larger Concert Orchestra. The students audition for the ensemble at the beginning of each school year, then practice regularly for an hour-and-a-half each week.

Earlier in the year, the Chamber Strings earned a Division 1 “superior” rating at the Illinois Grade School Music Association (IGSMA) district contest, and the group also competed in the IGSMA state festival.
