Willow Bend Students Participate in Reading Event
Who: Third- and fourth-grade students; Flash, a Bernese mountain dog who is also certified therapy dog
What: Reading aloud to a dog
Where: Willow Bend School, 4700 Barker Ave., Rolling Meadows
When: Wednesday afternoons, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Why: To increase student motivation to read; to improve reading fluency
Details: Flash and owner Anne Copeland visit Willow Bend weekly to participate in reading classes coordinated by Cindy McDowell, reading specialist at the school. Each student reads aloud to Flash for 20 minutes from a book he/she has practiced independently the previous week. According to Mrs. McDowell: “The best part is that Flash doesn’t care if the student makes a mistake. He just enjoys the attention and listening to a good story!”
