Stuart R. Paddock Teams Receive Illinois Youth Awards
Two teams from Stuart R. Paddock School have been selected as recipients of the Illinois Youth Awards presented by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs for achievements in energy education.
The Paddock teams—teacher Kathleen Cochrane’s entire third-fourth class and a five-member team from teacher Melanie Andres fifth-grade class—ranked among the top 10 schools in Illinois in the intermediate division. Both teams were recognized for their recycling initiatives and for their efforts in staging an Energy Carnival on Saturday, March 22, at the school. “These projects are closely aligned to the Illinois state standards in math/science, so they fit smoothly into our curriculum,” noted Principal Guy Herrmann. “We are proud of what these two teams have accomplished and very pleased that they have been honored with this state award.”
All team members will attend the Youth Awards recognition ceremony in Springfield on May 6 to receive their awards. The students have been invited to visit State Rep. Suzie Bassi’s office following the ceremony.
Mrs. Cochrane’s class has also been selected to represent the state of Illinois at the National Youth Awards, presented by the National Energy Education Development Project (NEED) in Washington, D.C., on June 20.
