Pleasant Hill Team Wins State Destination ImagiNation Competition
Seven fourth graders from Pleasant Hill School will represent the state of Illinois, District 15 and their school in the elementary division of the Destination ImagiNation Global Finals 2003 May 21-24 in Knoxville, Tennessee. The team earned the opportunity to compete by winning first place at the Illinois Destination ImagiNation competition in Bloomington, on April 5.
Destination ImagiNation is one of the world’s largest creativity and problem-solving programs, with elementary, middle school, high school and college youth from 47 states in the U.S. as well as 15 countries and Canadian provinces participating annually in regional, state, country and global competitions.
In the Illinois competition, Pleasant Hill team members Vivian McBride, Jeffery Pearson, Steven Pavlakis, Eric Tchon, David Vorick, Nichole Wellhausen and Jamie Yang effectively demonstrated their problem solving and creativity skills by creating a three-level “viDIo adventure” based on research about three countries: the United States, Germany, and Egypt. They created a story of a modern-day quest set in each of the three countries, overcame a technical obstacle, collected a reward item and described recent events. They also presented three “side trips” to showcase the groups’ talents, including writing and choreographing a poem, creating artistic “econo-boards” for each nation and designing a geometric replica of the Alexandria (Egypt) library. In addition, the team competed in the “Instant Challenge” segment during which they were given only a few minutes to solve a problem and present their solution to the appraisers.
“We are so proud of them,” said team manager Faye Vorick. Manager Jen Wellhausen added, “Their hard work and enthusiasm was evident at the state competition.”
The team is now working to raise money to fund their trip to the global competition.
