April Volunteer of the Month:
Maureen Janowski, Winston Campus volunteer

“Maureen has served Winston Campus tirelessly and graciously for years,” her nominator said of Maureen Janowski. With three daughters at Winston Campus, Maureen’s involvement began seven years ago, and she’s continued both as an active PTA member and as a parent volunteer.

Maureen’s first “job” at Winston Campus was in the Resource Center, where she volunteered for four years. She served as co-president of the PTA from 2000-2002, has been secretary of the elementary and junior high PTA, and served on the Scholarship Committee. She founded the PTA Family Outreach Committee and has taught “Nails and Beauty” to kindergarten through third-grade girls as part of the after-school specials program for the past five years. She’s also been a room mom, worked one-on-one with students in reading, been an adult helper for field trips, and served as a volunteer at many school functions.

“Her ability to question the way things work is her strongest suit,” her nominator pointed out. “She strives to keep all parents informed and involved. She created the PTA School and Parent Handbook for Winston as a resource for parents. She published many ‘Did You Know?’ articles in the elementary newsletter to provide answers to many commonly asked questions about the school. As PTA president, she clarified the roles of many committees and analyzed every aspect of the PTA to ensure that it runs efficiently and effectively. Because of Maureen, Winston Campus parents are well informed and students are well served.”

Maureen has lived in Palatine since she was seven years old, and her husband Wayne also grew up in Palatine. She earned a B.S. in home economics from Western Illinois University and is a registered dietitian. After an internship at Hines Veterans Administration Hospital, she joined Morrison Senior Dining, where she is now a regional dietitian supporting the company’s registered dietitians in the Chicago area. She and Wayne are the parents of Debbie, eighth grade; Lisa, seventh grade; and Jennifer, fifth grade.

Maureen is also a volunteer for the Palatine Children’s Chorus, an activity in which all of her daughters are involved. She helps raise funds for the organization and served as a chaperone for the chorus’ trip to England two years ago. In her leisure time, she loves to read.
