Plum Grove Students Advance to State MathCounts Finals
A team of Plum Grove Junior High students has qualified to participate in the state MathCounts competition, scheduled for March 8. This is the ninth consecutive year that Plum Grove “mathletes” have advanced to the state MathCounts finals. The school’s team won at state in 2001 and placed second in 2002.
Plum Grove’s team, which beat 15 other teams from the region to qualify for state, consisted of eighth graders Tom Banasiak, Vicky Hewitt, and Richard Shurtz, and seventh grader Nathan Foltz. These four, along with eighth grader Caroline Van Acker, placed among the top ten individual competitors. Shurtz earned second place, Nathan Foltz fourth place, and Tom Banasiak, fifth place. In the oral countdown exam, Tom Banasiak tied for second place.
Plum Grove’s Math Club is coached by teacher Rita Sheridan. Mrs. Sheridan, who plans to retire after this school year, was honored with a special cake and recognition from the MathCounts chapter organizers since this is her last year as a MathCounts coach.
