Learning Academy Students Plan Fundraisers for Canine Companions
Students in several classes at District 15’s The Learning Academy (TLA) have launched a community service project to raise funds for the Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) organization. The funds collected by the students will help offset the cost of maintaining and training a dog. The school’s goal is $1,500. TLA students will be selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts via order forms, available from the school by calling (847) 963-3400. Order forms and payment are to be returned to TLA by March 14, with pick-up from TLA’s temporary location, 330 W. Colfax, Palatine, set for “Doughnut Day,” March 21.
TLA students are also organizing “Change for Canines” at other District 15 schools. Each participating school will receive a decorated can for collecting spare change.
Canine Companions for Independence is a nationwide nonprofit organization that has been training service dogs to assist people with physical and developmental disabilities since 1975. Each dog is highly trained to perform more than 50 specialized commands. It takes two years and $10,000 to raise and train one of these special dogs. CCI relies heavily on private donations, as they provide these dogs at little or no cost to persons in need. At the present time there is about a two-year waiting list for a service dog from CCI.
