District 15 Schools Celebrate ‘Read Across America’

March 3, Dr. Seuss’ birthday, will be observed at a number of District 15 schools as part of the “Read Across America” celebration sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA).

Reading logs were distributed to all District 15 schools. Students will track their reading from February 24 to March 3, then turn in their logs to become eligible for a school-wide drawing. Five winners will receive $10 gift certificates to Barnes and Noble.

Other March 3 activities include:

—At Thomas Jefferson School, a Dr. Seuss video will be shown throughout the day. Staff and students will wear green to celebrate the Dr. Seuss book, “Green Eggs and Ham.” Thomas Jefferson principal Dr. Nancy Chalex and assistant principal Sean Walsh will partner to read “Green Eggs and Ham” for broadcast on the school’s video channel in the afternoon.

—“Reading Rock-a-Thon” is scheduled at Lake Louise School. Guest readers will be reading to students from a rocking chair placed in the main hallway of the school from 8:45 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. The readers, who will have 20-minute shifts in the rocking chair, will include school staff members, members of the District 15 staff and other volunteers. The goal is to enhance student appreciation for reading and literature, and to keep the rocker rocking all day!

Winston Campus elementary students will celebrate with a special video presentation featuring principal Leonard Massie as a judge administering an “Oath of Reading,” and assistant principal Craig Bowers reading a Dr. Seuss book to the students. Students will exercise their “reading power” through “Readaerobics” in their classrooms. Dr. Seuss and reading trivia are being included in the morning video announcements to build interest. Students are encouraged to dress up as a storybook character, and individual classrooms may provide a variety of activities to enhance the celebration. Winston Campus students have been encouraged ask family friends and relatives who live out of state to read a book and discuss it with the students via telephone or e-mail.

—At Gray M. Sanborn School, students and teachers will dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. Classroom activities will vary by teacher and grade level.

—A special guest reader will be visiting various classrooms at Pleasant Hill School. Dan Armstrong, director of the Palatine Public Library, will visit classrooms and read to the students from 1-3:30 p.m.

Willow Bend School principal Toni Kappel will pick a time during the day to read a Dr. Seuss book for broadcast school-wide.
