Sundling Junior High plans ‘Enrichment Night’

Who: Walter R. Sundling seventh- and eighth-grade students, sixth graders attending Sundling next year, parents and families.

What: Sundling’s “Enrichment Night,” a demonstration of the value that the school’s enrichment courses have in the educational development of all students. Students will informally demonstrate many of the skills and techniques they have acquired in their enrichment classes.

Where: Walter R. Sundling Junior High, 1100 N. Smith St., Palatine

When: 7:30–8:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 19

Activities:
Physical education—Demonstrations of team-building activities used in the program and the school’s new weight room and equipment. Parents are encouraged to try their skills.

Art—Students will demonstrate some of the two-dimensional techniques they have learned in painting and drawing classes, as well as digital enhancement and desktop publishing skills.

Tech lab/practical arts—Visitors will see how various activities are performed and use a sampling program to see how activities, testing, grading, and participation are assessed and administered. In the wood shop, an eighth-grade enrichment, students develop motor skills, learn construction concepts and basic safety. No demonstrations are planned, but visitors may tour the shop.

Computer classes—Seventh graders will showcase the businesses they have developed with a partner, ranging from prototypes to items for sale. Eighth graders will present the personal Web sites they have been developing.

Music—Students will demonstrate the use of technology by composing music using synthesizers and computers and using instructional software. They will also demonstrate the skills used in their world drumming course.

Television studio—Visitors will get a tour of the television studio and see clips from the school’s daily news broadcast, “WRS UpClose!” Print materials that support the class, WRS on the Air, will be available.
